30 Cannon Street
Refurbishment of an iconic, Grade II listed building in the City
30 Cannon Street is an office building located in the heart of the City of London. Architecturally unique, with a striking curvilinear design, it was built in 1977 as the London headquarters for Crédit Lyonnais by architects Whinney, Son & Austen Hall.

The building comprises six storeys, with an entrance on each façade. The façades are composed of tiers of repeating arched white frames surrounding recessed windows. Each tier is separated by a black granite string course that conceals drainage.
30 Cannon Street is the first building to be fully clad in glass-fibre reinforced cement (GRC). The double-skinned panels were fabricated from Portland cement reinforced with 5% alkali-resistant glass fibre. Their light weight and slim profile of the panels enabled the walls of the building to slope outward at a 5° angle. This creates additional floor space and allows natural light to reach the lower ground floor.

In 2016 the building underwent comprehensive refurbishment. This involved upgrading and re-locating the existing building services, interior refurbishment, creating a communal rooftop garden, and re-glazing the main façades to improve the performance of the envelope.
In 2022 and following the refurbishment, Interface were engaged by the client to review the visual appearance and overall condition of the GRC facade, review the existing maintenance proposals and make recommendations for the ongoing maintenance strategy.
